Engine Hoist FAQs

Do I need an engine leveler with an engine hoist?

An engine leveler is not required for every job, but it can make it easier to change the angle of an engine and transmission assembly during removal or installation. Make sure the leveler, chains, attachment points, and hoist are all properly rated.

What is the difference between a folding and fixed engine hoist?

A folding engine hoist can reduce storage footprint when not in use, while fixed designs may prioritize rigidity or heavier-duty construction. Compare capacity, boom reach, leg spread, caster design, overall height, and available shop storage.

Can an engine hoist remove a truck or diesel engine?

Possibly, but large diesel and truck engines can be much heavier and require greater boom reach. Verify the actual engine weight, required extension, hoist capacity at that extension, leg clearance, and vehicle height before attempting the lift.

How high does an engine hoist need to lift?

The hoist must raise the engine high enough to clear the engine bay, radiator support, or other obstacles while maintaining a safe boom position. Compare maximum hook height and boom reach with your vehicle and workspace.

What capacity engine hoist do I need?

Choose capacity based on the engine or component weight and the boom position you will actually use. Many folding shop cranes have lower capacity at longer boom extensions, so check the capacity chart rather than relying only on the maximum rating printed on the hoist.
